What the Critics Say

This set combines Rod Stewart's first two solo albums for Mercury Records, 1969's An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down (it was released in the U.S. under the title The Rod Stewart Album) and 1970's Gasoline Alley (plus a bonus track, "What's Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me)," thrown in for good measure), and both albums featured Stewart's then novel combination of R&B and folk, a combination he perfected for his next album, 1971's Every Picture Tells a Story, which contained the huge hit "Maggie May" and launched Stewart into superstardom. There are some classic early Stewart tracks contained here, including "Handbags and Gladrags," "Gasoline Alley," and the wonderfully loose and funky "Cut Across Shorty." ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
