What the Critics Say
An absolutely blistering set, well known in fan circles as one of Costello's best live bootlegs, circa 1986. The gig at an unknown location was a welcome home for Costello and the band, and this night they sound as amped up and on fire as any time in 1978. In fact, a majority of the set is either from that year's Blood and Chocolate or 1978's This Year's Model. Opening with "Tokyo Storm Warning," the band never lets up, even on slower numbers like "Beyond Belief." The highlight of this two-hour CD is a hair-raising version of "I Want You," delivered with a chilling venom surprising for even Costello. The singer's habit of dropping famous songs into his own live versions is shown here with a closing meld of "Poor Napoleon" with John Lennon's "Instant Karma" that seems made for each other. The mix is clear, possibly from a radio broadcast, though the occasional pop and scratch suggests that the CD is, in fact, mastered from an earlier vinyl copy. ~ Ted Mills, All Music Guide
