What the Critics Say
Since this covers Kool & the Gang's career from the late '70s onward, it can't be considered the Ultimate Collection. It's nothing if not thorough with its period of coverage, though not many will need a three-disc set like it. There's more than enough room to include the big guns -- "Ladies Night," "Too Hot," "Take My Heart (You Can Have It if You Want It)," "Joanna," "Fresh," "Celebration" -- but there's a little too much fluff for it to be recommendable. The Very Best of Kool & the Gang, released in 1999 by Mercury, includes all the hits listed above while dipping a little deeper into the '70s. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
