What the Critics Say
The Bonzo Dog Band's comedic styling worked for two reasons: one is that all seven bandmembers were superb musicians, two is that they knew what was funny, and when humor could be best-implemented. This collection of the Bonzo Dog Band's work (here featured in its entirety) is an amazingly enjoyable album, despite the huge number of different styles that the band experiments with. Opening with the debut album, this release chronicles all of the Bonzo's work from then until their 1972 reunion album Let's Make Up and Be Friendly. Considering the diversity of the Bonzo Dog Band, the album makes for a surprisingly consistent listen. The early works are the best in terms of originality and quality (moments of outright genius are commonplace on the material taken from Gorilla, The Doughnuts in Granny's Greenhouse, and Tadpoles), and the later era is at worst average. Admittedly, the album takes a big dive after the stupidly underrated Keynsham, but before that turning point, The Bonzo Dog Band really proves why the Bonzos are often hailed as the finest comedy outfit ever. ~ Ben Davies, All Music Guide
