What the Critics Say

A full third of the The Best of Tito Puente repeats titles compiled earlier on The Latin World of Tito Puente. In both cases, however, the other tracks are just as interesting. "Fat Mama" and "T.P.'s Shing-A-Ling" are in the much-maligned yet venerated Latin soul, or boogaloo, style. "Ay, Cariño" is a classic, affecting ballad, and various instrumentals display Puente's enormous versatility. The most unusual inclusion is "Fancy Feet," a bizarre pop novelty more in line with Command or Victor's "Stereo Action" series than Puente. Here it is -- just one more glimpse of the master at play. With over a hundred albums and several compilations, a "best of his best-of albums" may be in order. ~ Tony Wilds, All Music Guide
