What the Critics Say
If they were completely honest, the compilers of MC Shan's career wrap-up The Best of Cold Chillin' would've either retitled the disc or made it a 12"/CD-5, combining his massive "The Bridge" with "Down by Law" or "Living in the World of Hip Hop." Still, the author of one undeniable hip-hop classic did record some other interesting tracks, incisive storytelling raps like "Jane, Stop This Crazy Thing," "Project Ho," and "Cocaine" (here in a live version) as well as a few solid battle raps ("Kill That Noise," "Beat Biter") and an LL Cool J loverman track called "Left Me Lonely." Marley Marl's productions only began varying with his latter-day material, making many of these tracks production sound-alikes, but The Best of Cold Chillin' certainly doesn't miss anything from one of the Juice Crew's best. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
