What the Critics Say

No doubt, Salt N' Pepa emulated the Sequence, who preceded them as tough rap divas. The lineups and attitudes are similar, and none of the curvy rappers comes off as passive, unliberated women. Gwendolyn (Blondie) Chisholm, Cheryl (Cheryl the Pearl) Cook, and Angela (Angie B) Brown, b.k.a. Sequence were street-wise, gritty and butter-bred. "Simon Says" has a contagious, comical beat that's made for disco. Showing they do more than rap, they break off in "The Times When We're Alone," a slow and sensual winner. The nursery rhyme raps on "We Don't Rap the Rap," with its energetic beats, are like dancing pills. Sesame Street-like sounds continue, lyrically anyway, on "Funk a Doodle Rock Jam," infants must have loved this one, they could pronounce some lyrics, particularly "doodle." Heavy beats and well-spaced horns, married with Sequence's three part harmonies and leads, keeps you rocking until the end. The group borrowed from Parliament's "Give Up the Funk" and came up with "Funky Sound" where Blondie, Angie B and Cheryl the Pearl take turns busting bodacious raps. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
