What the Critics Say

Before the Sex Pistols, never had there been so many subsequent releases by a band that only issued a single studio album during their brief lifetime. But to borrow a title from one of the group's early post-break up compilations, various record companies have been Flogging a Dead Horse for years. And there appears to be no end in sight, as compilations of live material from ‘the good old days' continue to flood in, such as the 2005 double disc set, ‘Submission: Sex Pistols Live/Sid Vicious Live at the Electric Ballroom.' Disc one spotlights one of punk's all-time great acts, as it features readings of classics ("Pretty Vacant," "Anarchy in the UK"), covers ("C'mon Everybody," "Search & Destroy"), obscure originals ("I Wanna Be Me," "Satellite"), and even the group's infamous "Bill Grundy Interview." Disc two on the other hand, sees Pistols bassist Sid Vicious running through a set of entirely covers (save for one unreleased Pistols track, "Belsen Was a Gas") -- "Chatterbox," "Stepping Stone," "My Way," etc. Weighing in at only 22 tracks, the set could have easily been a single disc set. But as with most of the Pistols' releases after Never Mind the Bollocks, ‘Submission' is certainly not about saving the diehards some hard earned clams, but rather milking the Pistols for everything they're worth. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
