What the Critics Say
Three of the members of Talking Heads were design school students, so it's no surprise that they brought plenty of visual ideas to the world of music video when it began to take off in the early '80s. This hour-long compilation of ten clips shows the group to be unusually inventive as video artists, from the early "Once in a Lifetime" clip, featuring David Byrne alone doing some of his more eye-catching movements, to the segment from Byrne's film True Stories, in which a succession of "lip synchers" mime "Wild Wild Life." Byrne's weird, imagistic lyrics often provide visual cues in clips like "Burning Down the House" and "And She Was." In between the clips, a series of people tell personal stories that set the tone for the wildly different videos. Storytelling Giant is a compendium of some of the best work in music video in the 1980s. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
