What the Critics Say
This disc collected ten songs that appeared on 1963-1965 singles, along with a couple ("Gotta Find a Way" and "Wonder What My Baby's Doing Tonight") that made their first appearance on this LP. As it happens, it does have much of her best work from that era, although all but two of the tracks are on her finest anthology, Oh No Not My Baby: The Best of Maxine Brown (on a Kent CD). In addition, the entire album is available on another Kent release, which combines Spotlight on Maxine Brown and all but two songs from her 1967 Wand LP Greatest Hits onto one CD, with the addition of eight rare and previously unissued bonus tracks. So while Spotlight on Maxine Brown is a good pop-soul album on its own merits, it makes far more sense to seek out one of the Kent anthologies mentioned above than to get the original Wand LP. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
