South Then West - Selby Tigers

South Then West kicks off with a four-second recording of someone, presumably engineer/bass player Dave Gardner, instructing the band to "f***in' go!" For the disc's remaining 11:53, that's exactly what the Tigers do, tearing through three hyper, snarling teenage anthems and an ode to indie rock's patron saint of travel and camaraderie, Hiro Tanaka. South Then West captures the Selby Tigers doing what they do best -- unleashing their frustrations by lashing out at authority figures and faceless institutions, which, when punk music is the vehicle, means walking the precariously thin line between singularity and cliché. To their credit, this EP is exciting and fresh, a difficult feat for a group to accomplish in a country littered with the bloated corpses of so many modern punk bands. The Tigers have utilized the time-honored and (when implemented honestly) fierce combination of adolescent defiance and nasty guitars to great effect, but a punk band can only play the way they do for so long before their fire burns out...or worse yet, lapses into unintentional self-parody. ~ Bryan Carroll, All Music Guide
