What the Critics Say

Great may be too extravagant a term for this ten-song compilation. Entertaining would be appropriate. The set is culled from cuts released by Big Youth's own Negusa Negast label, mostly from the late '70s through the very early '80s. So, obviously this set does not capture the DJ at the height of his prowess, but still contains some worthwhile material. The highlight is the provocative "Green Bay Killing," a 1978 hit that angrily dealt with the slaying of a group of Rastafarians by Jamaican troops. "World War III," with its deep roots rhythm and easy-going toast, is less incendiary, but still has a sharp edge, while "Suffering," worked around a classic rhythm, finds the DJ dividing his time between chanted phrases and a cultural rap to much effect. There's a pair of C&W-laced numbers, and a clutch where the DJ actually sings. On "Love Jah With All My Heart" this was a mistake, but it works a treat on his version of the old Delroy Wilson hit "Dancing Mood." On the dubby "Roots Foundation," Big Youth does both, while on "Get on Up" he delivers an exuberant rap that actually overwhelms the rhythm. But that's nothing compared to the cover of the Beatles' "We Can Work It Out," a true nadir in the artist's career. The rhythms remain intriguing, but by now Big Youth is most effective when tackling cultural themes. Unfortunately, there's too few of those found here. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide
