What the Critics Say
Having garnered a significant following through incessant touring and earning considerable attention amongst the Christian music community, Nashville-based Say-So released this self-titled effort in 1997. Comprised of husband and wife Jim (guitar, keyboards, backing vocals) and Kim Thomas (vocals, various instruments) the duo's blend of folk, pop, and rock makes for an engaging listen with often breezy melodies complimenting the heartfelt sophistication of the lyrics. Kim Thomas's voice possesses the girlish yet mature charm of singers such as Cyndi Lauper and Jill Sobule, and, like those two, is deceptively versatile. What Say-So might lack in musical risk-taking, they more than make up for in craftsmanship and musicianship. There's an irresistible pull and infectious hook to tracks like the upbeat "Mercy Me," the wide-eyed optimism of "Wonderful World," (with Steve Taylor and Charlie Peacock adding trombone and coronet, respectively) the jaunty "Water & Blood," and the rustic-flavored sing-along "Everybody Please Join Hands." Say-So is an intelligent, mature collection that never fails to convey a sense of joy, making it a sure delight for fans of modern folk-pop. ~ Tom Demalon, All Music Guide
