What the Critics Say
Christopher Lawrence's Rise mix for City of Angles put the stateside trance DJ on the map, setting the stage for his eventual deal with Moonshine Records. Released in 1997, this mix hit the streets just as trance was becoming popular in the States, back when it was a little more edgy and harsh than how it would sound a year or two later. Those who enjoy the style of trance released by the Fragrant label in the late '90s should find much to savor here; however, those who prefer the Hooj Choons/Perfecto style of primarily European-produced trance may find this a bit too bland and undeveloped. Either way, it's somewhat interesting to see where Lawrence began relative to where he would end up. This element of novelty is probably the best reason to seek out this release instead of Lawrence's later mixes for Moonshine, which tend to be more satisfying. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
