What the Critics Say

Rare Piano Encores: the title says it all. Unless you are the most dedicated and the most long-lived of piano aficionados, you will have never heard the music on this disc before in your life. Which is by no means a bad thing: unknown music does not necessarily mean unworthy music. And if the music on this disc is not exactly immortal and perhaps not even memorable, it is as delightful in its evanescence as life itself. If the job is fiendishly difficult, Leslie Howard is your man. He can play anything and nothing is beyond him, which is absolutely a good thing since this is a disc of piano encores. But as jaw-droppingly amazing as his virtuosity is, Howard is able to get beyond the virtuosity to the soulful essence of the music. And while each piece is different -- hilarious in Rossini's Petit caprice, serene in Reger's Maria Wiegenlied, ecstatic in Bruckner's Erinnerung, orgasmic in Grieg's Ich liebe dich, sentimental in Grainger's Blithe Bells, or nostalgic in Howard's own Yuletide Pastoral -- Howard's performances embody the soulful essence of the music, an essence as evanescent as life itself. Encore, encore. Hyperion's sound is about 12 feet away and slightly to the right of the keyboard. ~ James Leonard, All Music Guide
