Nino Rota's score for Rene Clement's brilliant 1960 thriller Plein Soleil articulates the film's existential dread with rare eloquence. Rota captures the sun-kissed beauty of the film's Mediterranean setting as well as the pitch-black soul of antihero Tom Ripley (a phenomenal Alain Delon) via a lush yet oddly unnerving soundtrack that grows darker and more dramatic with each successive melody. Like Rota's benchmark collaborations with Federico Fellini, Plein Soleil is accessible yet deeply eccentric, painted in bold strokes that captivate the imagination even without cinematic accompaniment.
