Hypnotic, powerful, and the absolute template for the role of sex machine, James Brown was one of the most dynamic stage performers in the history of pop music, and his band was so rehearsed and sharp that it could change directions with the simple dip of one of Brown's shoulders or the stomp of one of his boot heels. His studio recordings are explosive, but reined in a bit from his live performances, so they were really only an adequate substitute for seeing the man in the flesh. Still, if it's all you can get, this little, tight set has the key studio tracks "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Please, Please, Please," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," and "Say It Loud-I'm Black and I'm Proud," each of which is a timeless treasure. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
