P.F. Sloan [EP] - P.F. Sloan

When P.F. Sloan finally got around to making Sailover, his first album of new material in 13 years (and his first to be released in the U.S. in 34), he seems to have had a few more songs than he could fit on it. Hence, there is this six-track EP, which repeats three songs from the album -- "Eve of Destruction," "Violence," and "Sins of a Family" -- and adds three not found on it -- a cover of the Turtles hit "You Baby" (co-written by Sloan), "Wild Strawberries," and "Whatever God Wants." The first three provide a good sampler of the album, mixing older material with the newly written "Violence," which decries not only violence itself but also the songwriter's attraction to it on TV and in the movies. "You Baby" is a warm, loose performance of an old favorite. And it's easy to tell why "Wild Strawberries" and "Whatever God Wants" were cut, even though they will be of interest to Sloan fans. The latter is a somewhat unfocused blues stomp reminiscent of Bob Dylan's '80s style, and the latter, while promising, has an uncomfortable tempo shift and probably should have been re-recorded if it was going to be used as anything other than a B-side. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
