What the Critics Say
At the ripe old age of 12, Aussie sensation Nathan Cavaleri released his blistering blues record Nathan. Involved in writing over 60 percent of the album, Cavaleri demonstrates that he is wise and talented beyond his years. The opening instrumental track "Lou's Blues" pits a standard backing blues groove along with horn arrangements to highlight his scorching guitar work. He switches easily to rhythm guitar, grinding out the riffs on a cover of Chris Rea's "Workin' on It" while managing to sneak in a few solo licks for good measure. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mark Knopfler, and Robben Ford, Cavaleri demonstrates that he has learned well from the masters. It's difficult to believe that someone so young could play with such soul and bravado, but he delivers jaw-dropping solos on track after track. Sweet Pea Atkinson provides the throaty vocal deftness on "Back to the Blues" as he elevates the desperation of the material through his ardent delivery. Surrounded by a skilled supporting cast, Cavaleri offers up an earthy blues effort that fits nicely alongside other teen blues sensations Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Jonny Lang. ~ Erik Crawford, All Music Guide
