What the Critics Say

This Dutch release is the second of three albums drawing on television soundtrack recordings from the TV series The Nat King Cole Show of 1956-57. During its first season, the show ran only 15 minutes, and this album presents Cole's performances from the second five shows. The format allows Cole, accompanied by orchestras conducted by Gordon Jenkins and Nelson Riddle, to mix recent songs such as "Just In Time" from Bells Are Ringing (sun g twice) and "Hey! Jealous Lover" with standards like "When You're Smiling" and his own hits such as "Too Young." Naturally, the December 24 show is given over to Christmas material. Cole even responds to a request for more trio material by leading a small-group performance of "Too Marvelous For Words," and Count Basie joins him for "Oh Lady Be Good." The sound is mono, and these albums are primarily of historical interest, but they are welcome nevertheless. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
