What the Critics Say

Nat Gonella, one of the most popular British trumpeter/vocalists of the 1930s, recorded frequently during 1932-1946. He worked in variety shows in the 1950s, recording albums in 1958, 1960, and 1961. He was out of the spotlight for years after that, just making one album in 1970, before re-emerging to record three final sets in 1975. My Favourite Things was Gonella's next to last LP, recorded on his 67th birthday. Happily, Gonella was still in prime form, both on the trumpet and vocally. He performs nine Dixieland standards with an octet that includes another trumpeter (Bob Wulffers), although Gonella takes most of the solos. Highlights include "That's My Home," "St. Louis Blues," "Margie," and "Birth of the Blues." Nat Gonella deserves to be better known by American jazz fans. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
