What the Critics Say
With their third album, Music for All Occasions, the Mavericks added slick country-pop to their arsenal of retro-country styles. The result straddles the line between affection and camp, since the band never goes completely overboard by drenching their songs with strings, and Raul Malo retains his aching Orbison-esque voice. However, that doesn't mean their songwriting has slipped, as all 11 originals are first-rate, updated honky tonk ravers or countrypolitan numbers. And the closing cover of "Somethin' Stupid," recorded with Trisha Yearwood, is a fun, kitschy delight. [This U.K. release contains one bonus track.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
