What the Critics Say

The much-hyped first release by natural-born U.K. press darlings the Wildhearts was just that: hype. First track "Nothing Ever Changes but the Shoes" is about the only semi-worthy entry to what would later become one of the most impressive and explosive songwriting catalogs of '90s British rock. Indeed, though main man Ginger had yet to sharpen his songwriting acumen, songs like "Crying Over Nothing" and "Liberty Cap" already show traces of his uncanny ability for juggling any number of different hard rock/heavy metal styles into surprising combinations -- not least of which is the surprising cement mixture of Metallica-sized riffing and pop-friendly verses seen on "Turning American." Completed by its not-so-subtle cover artwork, this was a modest first step for a band bound for both rock & roll legend and oblivion. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, All Music Guide
