What the Critics Say
Roger Daltrey's solo albums were often inconsistent and frequently filled with sub-par material, which makes Martyrs & Madmen: The Best of Roger Daltrey a welcome addition to his catalog. Culling 20 tracks from all seven of his solo albums (including the McVicar soundtrack), the collection contains nearly every worthwhile song he ever recorded, from "Giving It All Away" and "Free Me" to "After the Fire." Any casual fan -- namely, any curious Who fan -- will find Martyrs & Madmen to be more than a sufficient summary of Daltrey's career, since it not only showcases him at his best, it also suggests with its uneven material (even though this just contains highlights, there are still a few dogs scattered throughout the compilation) why he never became a solo star in his own right. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
