What the Critics Say

Liza Minnelli is an energetic collection released in 1968. This record captures an ebullient artist four years before her success in Cabaret. The album contains a solid collection of songs by famous singer/songwriters, including three by Randy Newman ("The Debutante's Ball," "Happyland," and "So Long Dad") and one from John Lennon and Paul McCartney (Revolver's "For No One"). One of the standout tracks is "The Look of Love," written by the team of Hal David and Burt Bacharach. Interesting, too, is the inclusion of "(The Tragedy Of) Butterfly McHeart," written by Minnelli's then-husband, Peter Allen, and "You'd Better Sit Down, Kids," written by Sony Bono. A good mixture of Broadway numbers and singer/songwriter material. ~ JT Griffith, All Music Guide
