What the Critics Say

The talented, if underrecorded and underrecognized trumpeter Charles Tolliver is well showcased on this quartet date. Assisted by pianist Alain Jean-Marie, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Ralph Van Duncan, Tolliver shows that he was still in prime form, stretching out during lengthy renditions of four of his originals including "On the Nile." The music is modern modal jazz, and Tolliver's tone and adventurous style perfectly fit the idiom. This excellent CD is the first of two volumes. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
