What the Critics Say

The seventh and final volume in this valuable LP series completes the Artie Shaw story only 19 years after his first recording session as a leader. There are five lengthy performances with his final Gramercy Five in June 1954 (featuring solos from pianist Hank Jones and guitarist Joe Puma) and three final performances with a string orchestra in November 1955. Shaw then became one of the very few major jazz figures to retire at his prime, a major loss to the music. This LP does show that he pretty much went out on top, still sounding quite modern. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
