What the Critics Say

The sixth in a valuable seven-LP series put out by the collector's label Ajazz focuses on Shaw's final working band, a version of The Gramercy Five that also boasts solos by pianist Hank Jones, guitarist Tal Farlow and vibraphonist Joe Roland. On such songs as "Besame Mucho," "The Grabtown Grapple," "Stop and Go Mambo" and "Love of My Life," Artie Shaw shows that he never did decline and that there was no musical reason (except his own boredom) why he chose to quit playing clarinet entirely shortly after this band broke up. All of the entries in this series are worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
