What the Critics Say

The fourth in a seven-LP series documenting Artie Shaw's little-known "later" recordings has six selections featuring the clarinetist with a studio orchestra and strings, and seven more rewarding performances with his final Gramercy Five, a sextet featuring pianist Hank Jones, guitarist Tal Farlow and vibraphonist Joe Roland. Shaw had listened closely to bebop and had subtly modernized his style; now he was fully prepared to stretch out with younger players. Most of this material has not been reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
