What the Critics Say

The third volume in this seven-LP series by the collector's label (a subsidiary of Joyce) has some real rarities, taken from a period of time when Shaw was barely active in music. He is heard with studio big bands on such songs as "Jingle Bells," "White Christmas" and "In the Still of the Night," backing singer Trudy Richards and with two versions of The Gramercy Five (but somewhat confined to accompanying vocals by June Hutton and Connie Boswell). True Artie Shaw collectors will have to get this intriguing set but more general listeners are advised to acquire his earlier recordings instead. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
