What the Critics Say

With the collapse of his short-lived bop big band in early 1950, Shaw went back into semiretirement. His recordings, heard on this LP (the second in a valuable seven-volume series), finds him with studio groups ranging from a standard big band to ballads with string sections and two jazz performances with a new Gramercy Five (this time featuring Lee Castle's trumpet and Don Lanphere's tenor). Most of these performances, however, have Shaw merely backing up commercial vocalists including Dick Haymes, Don Cherry (no relation to the trumpeter) and The Chelsea Three. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
