What the Critics Say

This English LP from 1987 features a pair of previously unreleased 1959 sessions presented by Leonard Feather that were recorded in England and the U.S. The British contingent was headed by Vic Lewis and includes trombonist George Chisholm and tenor saxophonist Ronnie Scott among the main names, while the U.S. group (both bands are nonets) has such West Coast all-stars as trumpeter Pete Candoli, altoist Bud Shank, guitarist Barney Kessel and drummer Shelly Manne and was put together by Jack Marshall. In both cases, the music swings and has its enjoyable moments, sounding as if it could have been arranged by Shorty Rogers. Worth searching for by cool jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
