What the Critics Say
To interpret the title of this recording, it seems that the outward experimentalist from Texas is hinting at his writing process, which often sounds as though he hit a record upon stumbling out of bed. His candid lo-fi albums are filled with the self-effacing melancholy and urban blues that is often so clouded in abstraction it is hard to define them as either avant-garde or folk, yet they draw on both idioms. His uniform oblique packaging adds to the mystery of this haunting music, which is such a private-sounding expression it is often discomforting to listen to. I Woke Up contains a certain voyeuristic beauty that is a musical parallel to the blurred photography that houses it. Like such photographs taken by accident, it may be hard to make out, but the essence of the moment is captured. Jandek's recordings work in this way -- oblique and enigmatic, yet vague and distorted. It seems waking up is enough to validate recording another album, and as for tuning up, that wouldn't be necessary. ~ Skip Jansen, All Music Guide
