What the Critics Say
Meat Loaf's Hits Out of Hell DVD is a collection of videos from his 1978 mega-album Bat Out of Hell which, at over 30 million sold, is one of the most popular of all time. His musical style has always been that of sweeping theatricality, so filmed interpretations of his songs seem like a natural match. However, these were all filmed in 1978 when the medium was new and experimental. As such, they do not compare to Meatloaf's later videos for songs like "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" from 1993's smash Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell. That being said, it is interesting to see what he was able to do three years before the creation of MTV. The live performances spliced into the songs are fascinating. Most Meatloaf fans will have seen the videos for "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" or "Bat Out of Hell" in clips. The other songs have the same feel and use of live footage. For fans only, Hits Out of Hell takes the intentional kitsch of the music to its logical, and entertaining, conclusion. These are some of the performances (in addition to The Rocky Horror Picture Show) that catapulted Meatloaf to stardom. ~ JT Griffith, All Music Guide
