What the Critics Say
Too Hot Live is a live Kool & the Gang set, presumably from the mid-'80s based on the track selection, when Kool & the Gang were at the height of their popularity. All the hits are here, performed fairly close to their studio counterparts. The only exception is "Too Hot," where they stretch out a bit, showing off some of the jazz chops that were more prevalent in their '70s days, prior to the addition of singer James "J.T." Taylor. Sound quality is good, but not great, making this a choice more for dedicated fans than casual listeners, who might be better-served with a greatest-hits package like Celebration: The Best of Kool & the Gang (1979-87). ~ Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide
