What the Critics Say
Switch on your average classic rock radio station and you're bound to hear a track sooner or later by Ted Nugent, Van Morrison, Meat Loaf, or Lynyrd Skynyrd. And while there is some sonic similarity between Nugent and Skynyrd, there's not much similarity between them and the other two aforementioned artists (although Meat Loaf did sing once on a Nuge record). So the fact that Nugent, Morrison, Meat Loaf, and Skynyrd are stacked one on top of another on the four-disc Greatest Collection doesn't make much musical sense. Also, the set's title is a bit misleading, as quite a few of the best-known tracks from all four artists are nowhere to be found here ("Cat Scratch Fever," "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," "Free Bird," etc.). That said, there are a few instantly recognizable classic rock standards that will probably be heard on the radio until the end of time ("Brown Eyed Girl," "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," "Sweet Home Alabama," etc.). To get somewhat passable samplers of all four of these artists in one fell swoop, Greatest Collection isn't a bad purchase. But if you're looking for extensive career overviews of each that leave no stone unturned, keep on looking. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
