Discount reissue label Pair's From the Heart is a 16-track compilation of Vikki Carr's Liberty Records recordings of the 1960s and early '70s. Not a greatest-hits set, it nevertheless begins with Carr's only really big hit, the 1967 Top Ten "It Must Be Him," and also contains "With Pen in Hand," one of Carr's other two Top 40 hits, and "Don't Break My Pretty Balloon," one of her easy listening hits. The choices for the rest of the album give her a chance to show off the talent for melodrama she displayed on "It Must Be Him." "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," another European song given an English lyric, is in a similarly unabashed style, and Carr also gets to express unbridled passion in such '60s pop standards as "For Once in My Life," "I Will Wait for You," "Goin' Out of My Head," and "Until It's Time for You to Go." She also gets a chance to use her Hispanic heritage on "Mas Que Nada" and "Cuando Calienta el Sol." The only real oddity is her cover of Kris Kristofferson's "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down," drawn from her 1970 album Nashville by Carr. She must be one of the few women who have ever cut the song (well, okay, Lynn Anderson and Sammi Smith did, too), and somehow, its portrait of hard drinking and a hangover doesn't sound convincing in her reading. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
