What the Critics Say

On the second of two LPs of Shaw's recordings for Musicraft, the great clarinetist is heard with studio musicians playing superior standards and obscurities in 1946. Mel Torme and/or his Mel-Tones are actually the stars on nine of these 15 selections, including a spirited "What Is This Thing Called Love?" The clarinetist plays well enough but often sounds as if his heart was not really in the music; at this point it was just a day's work for him. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
