What the Critics Say
If the track listing on Flip Your Whig appears to echo that of Black Soul Gentlemen, it's not because the Afghan Whigs were prone to repeating their set lists. It's because Flip Your Whig is a bootleg of a bootleg. KTS went so far as to crop the upper half of the Spin magazine band photo from Black Soul Gentlemen's cover. But where Flip Your Whig truly differs is in the addition of "Money" and "Long Tall Sally," two songs performed at an MTV awards show by the Backbeat band (the grunge Beatles) featuring Greg Dulli in the vocal role of John Lennon. (For those with a short memory, the Backbeat Band was a supergroup of alt-rock heavies and not-so-heavies put together to cover early Beatles songs for the Backbeat soundtrack.) They don't add that much value or advantage over its predecessor. What you do get is the same mediocre-to-decent radio broadcast from a show in Italy circa Gentlemen, and a more colorful booklet chock-full of blurry photos. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
