What the Critics Say
This ten-song Japanese compilation was originally released in 1968, just as Tommy was providing the band with its long-awaited breakthrough to mass acceptance. This is about as strange a collection as England's Direct Hits, only odder. Included is the mini-opera "A Quick One While He's Away," which had been left off of its equivalent album, plus a bunch of singles -- "Substitute," "Pictures of Lily," "Happy Jack," and their two Rolling Stones covers, "The Last Time" and "Under My Thumb" -- and odd album tracks, including the underrated "So Sad About Us." And it included the B-side "Waltz for a Pig," which was on a Who single but wasn't actually the work of the band at all. It's fun in its weird way, and certainly did its job in the Japanese market of exploiting familiar and obscure fare by the band. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
