What the Critics Say

Essential Fats Domino collects 20 tracks that provide little in the way of surprises but undeniably deliver the greatest R&B from New Orleans. While Fats recorded numerous tracks for the Imperial label in the '50s and early '60s, only a handful gained status as genuine rock & roll hits from the beginning of the genre. While most listeners are familiar with "Blueberry Hill," "I'm Walkin'," and "Walking to New Orleans," tracks like "So Long," "Blue Monday," "The Fat Man," and Hank Williams' "Jambalaya (On the Bayou)" are just as important. Essential Fats Domino should be considered a primer for the purchase of the Imperial/Capitol box set Walking to New Orleans. That said, most would agree a primer is unnecessary; go straight to the box set! ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
