What the Critics Say
Equivalent to Shades of Ian Hunter in its stock value, Collection gathers most of Hunter's best solo efforts but still leaves out a few goodies. Of course, songs like "Cleveland Rocks," "Just Another Night," "Ships," "Once Bitten Twice Shy," and "Bastard" are included to kick things off, and four tracks from Short Back and Sides are thrown in as well, including the pop frisky "I Need Your Love," which doesn't appear on Shades. Collection scores points with tracks such as "Man 'O' War" and "Silver Needles," which are best known for their appearance on the live Welcome to the Club album, and for the graceful "Irene Wilde," which stands as one of Hunter's most personal and heartfelt ballads, taken from 1976's All American Alien Boy. Hoople faves like "All the Young Dudes" and "All the Way From Memphis" are nice additions too, but fans will notice that tracks like "Lisa Likes Rock N' Roll" and "When the Daylight Comes" somehow failed to make the cut. But even with a couple of trivial omissions, Collection makes for an amusing set of some of Ian Hunter's better tracks, and should be purchased for its entertainment value but not as an all-inclusive compilation. ~ Mike DeGagne, All Music Guide
