What the Critics Say

This soundtrack CD rates a review because trumpeter Terence Blanchard (its composer) is listed as leader, but in reality the music is outside of jazz. The themes (which are played by a large string orchestra) are consistently somber and, although Blanchard's trumpet is occasionally the lead voice, no real improvisation takes place. The point is for the melodies to act as accompanying music for the film's action and presumably they succeed. However the score, heard independently of the film, never rises above the level of moody background music, and is therefore of no real interest to jazz collectors. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
