What the Critics Say
The early '80s were the weakest when it came to salsa popularity because of the audience's preference for merengue, and it seemed that the music was heading for a slump; however, it did not faze Olivencia and his powerful band, which indeed never show any signs of weakening. Star singer Frankie Ruiz acquires more presence, pushing himself throughout almost the entire repertoire, and even "Anita Tun Tun," a breezy merengue to keep up with the times, seems a fitting moment. Ray Santos' expert arrangement keeps moments like "Engañada" and the bolero "Que Me Dices" (well performed by Carlos Alexis) shining like solid gold. Oddly enough, this CD was re-released shortly after Frankie Ruiz's passing, but it has the same relevance as it did when it was originally recorded in 1983. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr., All Music Guide
