This two-CD, 40-track British compilation was, at the time of its release in 1998, the most comprehensive collection of Andy Williams's early recordings in print. Williams recorded for Cadence Records from 1955 to 1961, a period that coincided with the birth of rock & roll, and though he, six years Elvis Presley's senior and in the business since childhood, was uncomfortable with the new style, Cadence pushed him to try it as a means of breaking through. And break through he did, topping the singles charts in 1957 with the rockish "Butterfly." After a few more experiments with rock, however, he settled into the ballad style he pursued for the rest of his career. This set, which contained "Butterfly" along with Williams's 15 other chart singles for Cadence (both A- and B-sides, in chronological order), also selected from Wiliams LPs of the era such as Andy Williams Sings Rodgers & Hammerstein, Two Time Winners (in which he covered other people's hits), and Under Paris Skies (French songs) for a thorough, coherent anthology that summed up the first part of the singer's solo career effectively. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
