What the Critics Say
The title implies that the songs on this album were requested by listeners, a supposition supported by the list of folk classics like "Take This Hammer," "Darlin' Corey," and "Ole Smokey." The 12 cuts are a mix of live and studio recordings performed in the Brothers' typical commercial folk style, which is more studious and plain than many of the other chart-bound folk groups from their era. When performing humorous songs, the Brothers Four could sound almost exactly like the Kingston Trio, as heard on the lighthearted murder tale "Brady, Brady, Brady," but those departures accounted for only a small portion of their repertoire. The straightforward approach might seem bland to some, but certain serious types in the college audience of the '60s felt that the Brothers' unadorned approach was more musicianly and authentic than their overtly commercial competitors. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
