What the Critics Say
Bill Conti's score to the 1987 James L. Brooks satire Broadcast News is as nimble and soufflé-light as the film itself. Some distance removed from the robustly orchestrated soundtracks for which the composer is best known, its melodies and arrangements are appealingly simple, favoring piano, guitar, and flute over strings and brass. Conti exhibits admirable and uncharacteristic restraint throughout Broadcast News, maintaining a feathery touch even for more emotionally intense themes like "The Kiss" and "Restaurant Farewell." The brisk efficiency and energy of his melodies underscores the fierce intelligence of Brooks' script as well as the lively, nuanced performances of stars William Hurt, Holly Hunter, and Albert Brooks. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
