What the Critics Say
This is not the last CCM album Phillips recorded under her given name, Leslie, but it is the last of her overproduced, Debbie Gibson-esque '80s keyboard pop albums. Underneath her girlish screeching you can hear the beginnings of the persona that she would later develop as Sam Phillips on Virgin records. Sam sings "You try to tell the world how it should spin, but you live in terror." Leslie sang "You smokescreen with your judgmental words, but when the air clears you're just a scared little child." Sam sings "all the signs of life aren't clear and straight and always right." Leslie sang "it's not so easy finding answers in the shade." Phillips had already become fascinated with the uncertainty of "a grey world," but back in 1985 she still saw traditional Christianity as "black and white." ~ Darryl Cater, All Music Guide
