What the Critics Say

As its title suggests, this is an album on which Enoch Light and the Light Brigade re-create some big band hits, note for note. Whether it's Artie Shaw's "Begin the Beguine," Glenn Miller's "A String of Pearls," or Tommy Dorsey's "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," to name only the first three of the 21 tracks, Light has copied the arrangements and, to a large extent, the solos, found on the original records. The main difference is sound quality: these are high-fidelity stereo recordings, which makes them sound unusually crisp given our familiarity with the original mono recordings. Maybe, like colorized movies, this will make the music more easily accessible to potential new swing fans who need to be acclimatized to the old sounds. Older swing fans may wonder why Light bothered. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
