What the Critics Say
Released roughly a year before Afroman received worldwide notoriety for the title track, the Dirty Southerner released this record to an underground that welcomed him with open arms. Aside from the Grammy-nominated obvious hit, there are some songs here that give "Because I Got High" a run for its money. Make no mistake, Afroman is primarily into two things: getting high and scoring with the ladies. And while the concept is nothing new to rap, he does it with a certain swagger that is very seldom seen in the genre. However, that is not to say that Because I Got High isn't without fault. There are some songs that definitely go on for a bit too long, and there are times when he tries a bit too hard to become the next Blowfly. But that's part of the charm of this record. It's a look deep into the recording studio with guys that just want to make music and have fun doing it. ~ Rob Theakston, All Music Guide
